Does having a pool increase the value of a property?

With summer around the corner, you’ve no doubt thought to yourself how nice it would be to take a dip in your own backyard pool. Real estate agents often get asked if the addition of a pool will increase the value of a home. There is no clear answer as it often depends on what the buyer is looking for.

Not everyone values a pool (especially those who have had one in the past) as maintenance costs and effort can be high. This could possibly reduce the number of interested buyers, however, if someone is in love with a property a pool isn’t likely to deter them altogether.

Having said that, a pool can be a highly desired feature which could attract buyers who are willing to pay more for it. This is why, if you are considering installing a pool, it’s important to ensure the pool and surrounding areas are well designed and safety measures have been taken into consideration.

A pool that is superior in its design and construction will be better received, and more likely to add value, than one that’s not. It’s best to approach a pool in the same way you would approach an extension so take time to do your research when looking for suppliers and products.
